Haiti's Crisis: Gangs, Hunger, Despair.

Haiti is currently facing a profound crisis, marked by political instability, escalating violence, and an alarming humanitarian emergency. In these dark times, we as a Christian mission aim to bring hope and offer not only education to the children of Haiti, but also the love and truth of Jesus Christ.

Political Situation and Security Crisis
Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021, the political situation in Haiti has drastically worsened. Armed gangs now control about 85% of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and large parts of the country. These groups spread fear and terror, leading to massive displacements and an intensification of the humanitarian crisis. Over 5,600 people were killed in the past year due to ongoing violence, and more than a million people are fleeing within the country. People are afraid to leave their homes.
That is why we are doing everything in our power to create safe spaces where children can learn, play, and hold worship services.
Dramatic Increase in the Cost of Living

The economic situation has worsened drastically alongside the security crisis. While the general inflation rate was about 26.6% in November 2024, food prices have risen even more sharply. Food inflation has recently surpassed 30%, but in many regions of Haiti, basic food items are now twice or even three times as expensive as they were the previous year. A major reason for this is that armed gangs control supply routes and block the transportation of food. Deliveries from the neighboring Dominican Republic are hardly allowed into the country, further exacerbating the hunger crisis. Many parents are desperate because they can no longer feed their children. Families now spend up to 70% of their income just on food—if they can even get any. In this desperate situation, education remains an unreachable luxury for many children.
Hunger Crisis and Its Impact on Children

The combination of violence and rising prices has led to an unprecedented hunger crisis. Nearly half of Haiti's population—about 5.4 million people—is suffering from acute hunger. Children are particularly affected: Over 600,000 of them are acutely threatened by hunger, which has long-term effects on their health and development.
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God" (Luke 18:16). These words are a mandate for us! We are fighting not only for the physical survival of these children, but also for their spiritual well-being. In our schools and programs, we teach them not only to read and write, but also the saving message of Jesus.
Challenges for Humanitarian Projects
Our organization, Ogannesyants International Ministries, has been operating in Haiti for many years, committed to building schools and providing humanitarian aid to offer children education and hope for the future. However, the current circumstances present us with immense challenges. Construction costs have multiplied due to inflation and the unstable situation, placing a heavy burden on our financial resources.
Yet, we trust that God will open doors. With your help, we can continue our work despite all obstacles and give these children a future—not only for this life but for eternity.
